Twenty-nine miles long with 115 miles of shoreline, the Great Sacandaga is a reservoir-sized playground — and its local edition of every sport, from derby fishing to Nordic skiing, is legendary.
On the water
A marquee fishing lake and a summer flotilla.
One of the biggest, most open reservoirs in the Adirondack region — ideal for cruising, wake sports and some of the best walleye and pike fishing in the state. Water levels rise and fall with the dam's flood-control releases, so mind the shallows early in the season.

Beaches & swimming
Northampton Beach (DEC)
Day-use beach + guarded swimming (mid-June–Labor Day), campground, boat launch and canoe/kayak rentals on site.
Mayfield Public Beach
The lake's only staffed-lifeguard beach — end of Burr Rd off NY-30. Season passes or ~$10/day per vehicle.
Northampton Town Beach
Lifeguarded on NY-30 north of the Northville bridge, open afternoons late June–late August.
Broadalbin Town Beach
Lakeview Rd beside the state launch. Time-of-season restrictions have applied — confirm current swim status.
Public boat launches
Protect the lake — clean, drain & dry. The reservoir carries spiny waterflea. Wash your boat and gear before leaving a launch and never move live bait or plants to other waters.

On the trails
The trail that starts at the village café.
The Northville–Lake Placid Trail is one of New York's classic long-distance footpaths — roughly 135 miles from its southern terminus at Northville's Waterfront Park all the way to Lake Placid. It's been carrying hikers through the Adirondack interior since 1922.
The first ~3.5 miles are a gentle road-and-track walk out of the village, then the footpath climbs through the Shaker Mountain Wild Forest — Section 1 ends at Benson (~12 mi) where the Silver Lake Wilderness begins. No summits, moderate and non-technical, but remote: carry a map and be self-sufficient.

Shore & family
Campgrounds, eagles, and the classic photo.
Bald eagles nest along the lake and winter by the dozen at open water near Conklingville Dam — best viewing December–February at dawn. Ospreys, loons and great blue herons are summer regulars. Always view from a distance.

Sunset Bay, Mayfield

Rainbow's End & Sacandaga Campground, Northville
Wooded, riverside camping near the trailhead.
Scenic must-do: drive NY-30 up the east shore, cross the iconic Batchellerville Bridge, and wind the western shore on North Shore Road to the Conklingville Dam — where the Sacandaga spills back into the Hudson at Hadley. Golden hour on NY-30 is the postcard shot.

Winter & off-season
The lake becomes a season of its own.
When the reservoir freezes thick, ice-fishing villages of shanties rise straight out of the ice near the Broadalbin launch, Sand Island channel and off Northville — and the February Walleye Challenge turns the lake into a 1,500-angler winter carnival.
Off the ice: 400+ miles of groomed Fulton County snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing at Lapland Lake Nordic Center (50 km of trails near Benson), and wintering bald eagles gathered at the dam.

Licenses
Anglers 16+ need a NY freshwater license. Resident annual $25 (16–69), $5 (70+), or short-term passes; under-16 free. Buy online via DEC.
Rules
Great Sacandaga is a Special Regulations water — Region 5 rules apply. Walleye & pike open the first Saturday in May; ice fishing is permitted; rainbow trout are stocked yearly.
Handle big fish with care
Trophy pike are vulnerable to handling stress — use a rubberized net, wet hands, and revive before release. Respect the size and creel limits.
