Do I need a fishing license at Great Sacandaga Lake?
Yes — anyone 16+ needs a New York freshwater fishing license. Buy it online at dec.ny.gov; under-16 fish free.
When is fishing best on the Sacandaga?
Walleye and pike open the first Saturday in May — spring and early summer are prime, the fall bite re-fires as fish move shallow, and winter means the ice-fishing derby season.
Can I ice fish here?
Yes — ice fishing is permitted, and the frozen lake is famous for its winter shanty 'villages' and the February Walleye Challenge.
